OK, so Joe the Plumber is becoming a household world. But who exactly does “Joe” represent?
Yes, I too am another “Joe the Plumber”. If you are like me, you get up every morning and strap on your working clothes and lace up your boots or shoes and off to work you go. No one has to drag you out of bed and no one really wonders if you are going to be at work or on time. Your boss, who is probably the owner of the Company you work for is there before you, and has been for at least an hour or so. You probably have the keys to the place and might even lock up on occasion. You are the employee of a small business.
Most Americans are actually employed by small businesses. The owner is someone who started with an idea and plain guts and probably very little money. He managed to scrape up enough money for that first months rent on his building and managed to get enough credit on his credit cards to purchase the bear necessities to run a business. He was his first employee and many months went by that he wondered if he was going to have enough in business to even pay his house payment, car payment, and utilities.
Lunches were sometimes, if not often, missed. Customers often complained and he did all he could to make things right for them. He never said no to them as he realized that they had to keep coming back. He gave his very best to each of them and never complained about having too many. Hours began early and ended very late.
Then, that miraculous day arrived and your “Boss” found himself needing another hand. Business was good and another employee could help turn long days and nights into a bit more manageable days and nights. There you were that day just happening to be looking for a job. He offered you one and you knew going in that they pay wasn’t going to be the greatest and benefits non-existent- at least to start. In a couple of years, maybe less, another employee is hired and then another and another. Soon, you find yourself as a manager or foreman of a couple of these new fellows. The owner calls you in one day and tells you how good things have become profit wise, and that the Company is starting a health insurance plan for the employees and he wants you to get the information needed to start things moving. A couple of weeks later, you have a decent health plan that your employer is paying part of the premium as you pay part. It works pretty good for you and you all too soon find out that your kid’s broken arm from that bicycle wreck is taken care of by that same health care plan.
A few years have passed since that bike accident and your boss calls you into the office. Business is expanding with close to 25 employees now and he feels you have done a remarkably good job. You are going to run his new operation across town. Wow- now you are finding that you have something you can be proud of job wise. A new 401K plan is in place and you have saved a bit for retirement. Man, life is really good as your new house is being built for you and your family and a new truck (or car) is in the driveway. Your wife is working only part-time now and has more time with the kids and their school activities.
Then, one day, the boss calls you over to the main office. It seems that our new President just passed a new tax law and it is going to take more of the income from his business than he was prepared for. Things were a little tough as it was, but this new tax was forcing him to make some decisions, and his decisions were going to affect his business and some of the employees. Unfortunately, he was going to have to close that new branch and you had to make a choice- go back to your old job with a pay cut, or perhaps even a layoff. Your Company’s owner had raised prices but business wasn’t as good as it used to be, so scaling back was the only option. Fewer working hours were a very real possibility as well.
Now you think about that scenario for a moment. Then think about this as well.
Are you one of those employees who is supporting Barack Obama for President? If you are, then this is going to be your worse nightmare in a few short months if he is elected.
Most people I know want only one thing from life. They want an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work. They want some assurances that the owner of that business will be around for another few years and be able to offer opportunities for advancement as growth occurs. You may not understand all the details of his business, but you pretty much know when things are going well and when they aren’t. You can see it in the owners face and you can see it in his pay raises and benefits. You love where you work and you know that the owner of that place you go to everyday is just like you, only he writes the paycheck on Fridays.
You see, Sen. Obama’s idea of “spreading the wealth around” isn’t really about you. It is about turning this nation into a place where the opportunity that exists today will be just a story you tell your kids or grand-kids. No promise of wealth redistribution is going make you better off, it is actually going to cost you dearly. It may cost you your job, your home, your car, and everything else you have worked for. Your small business employer will be one of the first to go as will the paycheck you work for. Millions will be without jobs and millions more on the brink of losing theirs.
Then where is the money coming from to pay for the “grand vision” Sen. Obama is offering?
Well, maybe he can call “Joe the Plumber” and see if he can come up with a few more tax dollars to pay for your “government wealth” Sen. Obama promised he would “spread around”.
“I’m sorry, the number you have reached is no longer in service”. Seems “Joe the Plumber” has closed his doors too.
