Merci Beaucoup Sen. Obama, But I Speak English

With visions of sugarplums dancing in his head, Sen. Obama may have had his “Spanish Armada” sunk and his hopes for becoming President scuttled.

Barack Hussein Obama may be his own worst enemy. I have heard nothing but infuriating remarks regarding his desire for all American children to be required to learn Spanish. On that issue alone, it shows his arrogance and elitist attitude toward America in general and his views on globalism have been revealed. Unless he has been hiding under a rock, and I suspect he really has been, this nation has definite emotional connection with English as the language of the United States of America.

When you travel the world, which I have somewhat, you discover some very important things regarding transportational language requirements. Airplane pilots who fly international flights are required to have mastery of the English language. Air traffic controllers in foreign nations who handle International flights are also required to have the same mastery. Unless they do, then there is no pilot or air traffic controller that is going to be handling international air flights. English was adopted years ago as the standard language for air travel and ship travel as the language that is spoken to prevent major disasters.

Yes, children today need the availability of a second language if they desire to learn one. Mandatory requirements do exist if a student chooses an academic tract of education in almost every high school and some even in middle and grade schools, students are exposed to other languages. But seldom are there needs for other languages in everyday experiences for the vast majority of students. English is the language we communicate in. Many of our schools are also required to teach bi-lingual curriculums to accommodate non-English speaking students. Those are nothing but detrimental to both English speaking students and offer no incentive to learn English for those speaking other languages.

Sen. Obama has opened nothing less than a wound that has been driven very deep with one simple phrase that you hear when you dial a telephone number for any customer service center- “Press one for English, press two for Spanish (and that second one is not spoken in English)”. Those in this country who have not mastered the English language have basically thumbed their noses at the language of this country and will have absolutely no desire to learn it, master it, or speak it unless they have no access to their native tongue. But in an effort to be “politically correct”, we find multi-lingual signage throughout every transportation center, airport, or bus station you may visit. Granted, if it is an International hub, it makes good sense, but for it to appear on every bus, train, or plane you may enter, it only gives a disincentive to learn English.

There appears to be a distinct effort to destroy American traditions and American values from the assaults being made by Liberals in this country. It ranges anywhere from the removal of any reference to Christianity in public places to adopting various traditions of other nations into our celebrations and holidays. The idea that multiculturalism indicates our acceptance of others is flawed from the onset. This nation has been recognized as the melting pot of the world, yet it was the world that melted into America, not America melting into the world. Liberals are doing nothing more than pandering for votes in other cultures with their efforts in their “other language” initiatives and ideas. Sadly, many of us simply will accept that as a good thing for this country and make little effort to stem the adoption of laws requiring it’s implementation.

Believe me that no other nation in this world makes accommodations for Americans the way we do for other nations. The pandering and acceptance is almost sickening when Liberal politicians make every effort to assure that Americans assimilate into foreign cultures rather than requiring that they assimilate into ours. The efforts for inclusion for those who speak other languages in the workplace, our service centers, and our products (read the instructions and you will understand) have become almost nonsensical. There is no level of expectation for those from other countries to learn our language, our traditions, nor accept our culture as their own. That begins with learning English.

This nations heritage was from English speaking cultures. It has been and should and will continue to be an English speaking nation only if we as Americans make correct choices in electing our politicians. Liberalism has once again shown itself to be the force that will ultimately destroy our cultural and language heritage. This time, Sen. Obama, I refuse to press “2″ for Spanish. Add to that I am damn tired or pressing “1″ for English too. No merci beaucoup for me either. We bailed the French out not once, but twice when the Germans beat in their door. Let their arrogance prevail in France, just not on my nations shores.

The list of foreign countries that require their school children to learn English is very long, and includes, among others, Germany, Holland, France, India, Japan, and probably Switzerland and several Latin American countries. Educated people speak more than one language; uneducated people generally do not; in fact, most of them can’t really be considered fluent even in their own language. The countries requiring their kids to learn English are competitive in global economy. America certainly is competitive, but as can be seen in the ever-increasing American indebtedness to China, America is falling behind. You apparently are opposed to Americans being more educated, more able to communicate with the world. Since when is ignorance an advantage for a person in any endeavor? Ignorance in a population is a disadvantage on the world stage; it is really only good for manipulating that population for political ends. I’d be interested to learn why you are opposed to mandatory foreign-language education in the US.

    To Mark in Irvin;

Sadly, you missed the entire point of learning a foreign language and my take on what it meant.

First, I DO totally agree that learning a foreign language is a trait that is admirable and perhaps even desirable…for those who desire to learn one. For those who don’t, then the words “Freedom” and “Liberty” come to mind. For your education on those term, I suggest reading the Preamble of the Constitution of the United States. To me, that means I have choice and to take away that choice, is just another government infringement on my RIGHTS GIVEN BY MY CREATOR.

Now let’s take your belief that other nations require English as a second language. Perhaps you are totally correct, but for what reason do they require such education. It’s simply because that English is the language used universally in the world. It is the language of SUCCESS; not French, German, Spanish or any other language you may offer. Since that is true, then why in the world should I learn any other language other than English.

Sadly, the vast majority of our students today can’t even spell most common words, can barely read at an eight grade level, and please, if you dare, try to read something they write and make an interpretation of it’s meaning. Punctuation is non-existant and understanding sentence structure is not part of the lesson plan. Until we have those graduates who can actually be proficient in ENGLISH, I see no reason to teach any other language. THIS is the failure of a government ran, public education and many students are victims of this debacle.

Please, don’t tell me we need to require a foreign language in our schools. Let’s teach the language of SUCCESS and then see who is wanting the foreign language education secondly.

Thank you Michael for a well-written article I agree with.

Our schools (with many exceptions, BTW) don’t expect much from our students, and that’s often what we get: “not much”. If we expected more from our students, like, say a foreign language, we’d probably get more. Besides, knowing a foreign language is a benefit in and of itself, as a discipline. Many of our students aren’t very disciplined either.

  5. Mark,

I can only speak of what I know (since I am far removed from public school), but all the schools around here in Virginia require at least 2 years of a second language during the students’ high school years. The courses generally offered are Spanish, French, Germany, and Latin. And while all of those might help in the future (Latin basically for a better understanding of English), the language we should currently encouraging our children to learn is Chinese.

Much like Japanese was the most important language for us to know two decades ago, Chinese will be the language of the next decade if their economy continues to expand. Spanish is not necessary internationally (nor should be necessary at all domestically) since the growing markets are not located to our South.

The implication (not directly stated) by Obama is that we should encourage our youth to learn Spanish rather than encouraging our Southern immigrants (both legal and illegal) to learn our language, just as our European and Asian residents/citizens had to do when coming here. While it isn’t written in law, English is the national language when you consider all of our national documents are written in English stemming all the way back to the Constitution. The vast majority of the nation should not have to learn the language of the few who refuse to adapt as everyone else has done over the centuries.

I can say plenty more than merci beaucoup in French, and could give a vivid description of Obummer, but this is a family website.

  7. English is the most important language across the globe. It is the official language of more than 53 countries and about 1.8 billion people use it, making it the most widely used language in the world. It is the preferred language for international business and scientific communications. In a world that is becoming more and more “flat”, mastering the English Language is definitely a global advantage that will take you a long way and help you to reach your goal and the zenith of the success.
