You Ain’t Seen the Elephant…Yet. Obama’s “Free Lunch” Isn’t for You
The thing we call our Federal government is like that proverbial “elephant”. Sadly, there are those who haven’t really seen it for what it is becoming rather than what it needs to be.
As many Conservatives are becoming more and more engaged in this Presidential election, many are concerned about the various polls showing Sen. Obama leading this race. There are many things in the overall results you haven’t been told that perhaps needs to be discussed that you can rest assured won’t be covered by the main stream media.
Personally, in the 36 years I have been eligible to vote, I have never been contacted by any pollster regarding elections. Think about that for a second. I feel I represent a very large portion of most main stream voters with conservative views about life in general. Like most people, I find myself budgeting money, cutting my own grass, fixing broken things around the house and getting up and heading to work everyday. The taxes I pay for the return I get are minimal at best from our government and I don’t get caught up in the promises made by our government for a better this or that, but instead, look to candidates who will find ways to make my tax dollars work more efficiently for the good of the nation. I pay for my own healthcare and don’t want it taken away and turned into another “Medicare/Medicaid fiasco” under government control.
I also don’t expect many things from government in terms of payback for the tax dollars I pay. I only ask for decent roads, clean water, a protected food supply, and less intervention in my daily life from government regulation. I want to know my money is safe in the bank I choose and that because of my age, sex, or race, I am not discriminated against for opportunities that come my way. Those are things I am willing to pay for that government provides in a somewhat efficient manner. Anything else is usually mishandled and filled with waste and largess when government gets involved.
Polls seldom tell you that most Americans think just like me. They don’t tell you that smaller is better when it comes to peoples opinion of our government. We see inefficiency and we see waste each and every time a government project runs over estimates and we see spending in Washington out of control in a manner unseen in this nations history. We also have opinions about President Bush that are not always so favorable when it comes to his handling of spending and reigning in the spread of government.
I was told years ago that there was no such thing as a “free lunch”. As life and time moved on, I realized that it was more than just a saying, but represented a truth of life. When political candidates make promises of grandeur, there is always a price to pay for those promises. Lavish and extravagant promises of healthcare for all, lower taxes for all, expansion of more and more government projects and programs raise red flags with me. I know that no President is going to be able to deliver such promises without an associated cost involved.
The question I always ask is, “what is it going to cost ME ?” I can assure you that we have only ONE Presidential candidate that is going to cost me a LOT of my hard earned dollars in spite of promises to the contrary. Again, I am reminded of something I was told as a young man by my Grandmother. She often would tell me when discussing ideas that “you ain’t seen the Elephant yet”.
Now that seemed perplexing at first but it forced me to think through every decision and every position I have ever had to take. That “elephant” we call the Federal Government is huge. It is also expensive and costing trillions of dollars to make run. The tentacles of government reaches into the lives of each of us and has evolved into a wasteful and almost predatory creature that seems to have no limits. Unless we as a voting people can elect officials that will corral that reach into something manageable and less invasive, we are headed for a far deeper financial crisis than we have today.
I can point to only one candidate that can demonstrate a history of reeling in the cost of government. The Friday night debate allowed Sen. McCain to once again reiterate that position as I heard the other candidate talk about a bigger and more fat laden government. Each of us will bear a harsher burden with more and more of our incomes being taken to pay for these programs. The costs are going to be great and unless you as a voter understand the size and scope of this “elephant” he wants to create, you better think twice as you decide who you are going to vote for this election.
John McCain can and will force this government to become answerable to “we the people”. I believe him as he calls for Country First. He understands the plight most people face each and every day. He understands that middle America is suffering and he understands that Americans working and earning are the keys to growth of this nation. He also understands that government is in the way of allowing that to happen.
So that decision is now yours and yours alone. Are you ready to allow this Elephant to grow, or are you ready to put him on a diet of all diets? Just remember, that free lunch being promised isn’t for you, but for that Elephant that will grow and grow under an Obama administration.

Just wanted to say HI. I found your blog a few days ago on Technorati and have been reading it over the past few days.
I just stopped by your blog and thought I would say hello. I like your site design. Looking forward to reading more down the road.
WOW!!!! This us great, Michael.
I only wish McCain would say it exactly this way – plain, simple, strong – on the campaign trail and in debates.
You should consider sending it to McCain or his campaign people. This is better and would counter Obama’s hopey-dopey drivel.
And it is so uplifting.
